Lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material — identical in chemistry, crystal structure, and optical properties. The difference is origin: one forms in the earth over billions of years, the other in a laboratory over weeks. Both are real diamonds, and both can be independently certified.
What they have in common
A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation or a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. It is pure crystallised carbon with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same brilliance, and the same fire as a natural diamond. To the eye — and to standard jewellery testing — they are indistinguishable.
Both types are graded on the same 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat) by the same laboratories, including IGI, GIA, and HRD.
How they differ
- Origin: Natural diamonds form deep in the earth over 1–3 billion years. Lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks using HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapour deposition) methods.
- Price: Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than natural diamonds of comparable quality — often 30–70% less — letting you buy a larger or higher-grade stone for the same budget.
- Rarity and resale: Natural diamonds are finite and hold long-term value better. Lab-grown prices have fallen as production scales, so they are best viewed as a purchase to enjoy rather than an investment.
- Certification note: Reputable certificates always state whether a diamond is laboratory-grown, so there is no ambiguity about what you are buying.
Which should you choose?
There is no wrong answer — it comes down to what you value. Choose lab-grown if you want the maximum size and quality for your budget, or prefer a diamond with a fully traceable, controlled origin. Choose natural if rarity, long-term value, and the billion-year story matter most to you.
Tirupati offers both natural and lab-grown diamonds, each ethically sourced and independently certified. Our team can help you compare equivalent stones side by side.
