A diamond certificate — also called a grading report — is an independent, expert assessment of a diamond's characteristics. It is issued by a gemmological laboratory with no stake in the sale, which is exactly what makes it trustworthy. A certified diamond is one whose quality has been verified by a neutral third party.
What a certificate tells you
A grading report documents the diamond's 4Cs and more, so you know precisely what you are paying for. A typical report includes:
- The 4Cs: Cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, each independently graded.
- Measurements & proportions: Exact dimensions, table and depth percentages, and symmetry.
- Polish & symmetry grades: How well the diamond was finished.
- Fluorescence: Whether the diamond glows under UV light, and how strongly.
- Origin: Whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
The major laboratories
- GIA: The Gemological Institute of America created the modern 4Cs and is regarded as the global benchmark for consistency and strict grading.
- IGI: The International Gemological Institute is one of the largest labs worldwide, widely used for both natural and lab-grown diamonds.
- HRD: Headquartered in Antwerp, HRD is a respected European authority following international grading standards.
Why certification protects you
Without a certificate, you are relying entirely on the seller's own description of quality. With one, an independent expert has verified it. Certification lets you compare diamonds fairly across sellers, confirms you are getting the grade you paid for, and supports insurance and resale down the line.
Every diamond offered by Tirupati is certified by IGI, GIA, or HRD, and each listing links directly to its certificate so you can verify the details yourself before purchasing.
