Diamond Shapes: A Complete Guide to Every Cut

A diamond's shape is its outline — round, square, oval, and beyond — and it is the first thing most people notice. Shape is distinct from cut quality: it is a matter of personal style, though each shape has ideal proportions that make it look its best. Here is a guide to every popular diamond shape.

Brilliant-cut shapes (maximum sparkle)

  • Round Brilliant: The most popular and most brilliant shape. Its 58 symmetrical facets maximise light return. A timeless choice for solitaires.
  • Oval: Brilliant faceting in an elongated silhouette that looks larger than its carat weight and flatters the hand. Ideal L/W ratio 1.30–1.50.
  • Cushion: Rounded corners and larger facets give a soft, romantic look with vintage character.
  • Radiant: Combines an emerald outline with brilliant faceting for exceptional sparkle. Ideal L/W ratio 1.00–1.35.
  • Princess: A sharp, square modern classic — the second most popular shape. Ideal L/W ratio 1.00–1.05.
  • Pear: A teardrop blend of round and marquise; elegant and distinctive. Ideal L/W ratio 1.50–1.75.
  • Marquise: An elongated shape with pointed ends that maximises carat weight and appears large. Ideal L/W ratio 1.75–2.25.
  • Heart: A romantic brilliant-cut shape; symmetry is critical to a well-defined outline.

Step-cut shapes (clarity and elegance)

Step cuts use long, parallel facets that create a 'hall of mirrors' effect rather than intense sparkle. They emphasise a diamond's clarity and are prized for their understated sophistication.

  • Emerald: A rectangular step cut with a large open table that showcases clarity. Choose a higher clarity grade, as inclusions are easier to see.
  • Asscher: A square step cut with cropped corners and concentric facets for a distinctive Art Deco look.

How to choose a shape

Shape is ultimately about personal taste. That said, a few practical points help: round brilliants hide inclusions and color best and sparkle most; elongated shapes (oval, marquise, pear) can make fingers look longer and appear larger per carat; and step cuts (emerald, asscher) reward higher color and clarity grades because there is nowhere for imperfections to hide.
