Carat is the unit used to measure a diamond's weight — one carat equals 0.2 grams, divided into 100 'points'. A common misconception is that carat measures size. It measures weight, and two diamonds of equal carat can look noticeably different in size depending on how they are cut.
Why price rises faster than weight
Larger diamonds are exponentially rarer than smaller ones, so price does not rise in a straight line with carat weight — it accelerates. A 2-carat diamond is far more than twice the price of a 1-carat of the same quality, because a single large rough crystal is much scarcer than two smaller ones.
Prices also jump at landmark weights — 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct — because demand clusters at round numbers.
Buying just below a landmark weight
Because of those price jumps, a diamond just under a round number offers excellent value. A 0.90ct or 0.95ct diamond looks almost identical to a full carat but can cost meaningfully less. The same applies at 1.90ct versus 2.00ct. The visual difference is a fraction of a millimetre; the price difference can be substantial.
Cut changes how large a diamond looks
Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear different sizes. A well-cut diamond returns more weight to the visible top (the table) rather than hiding it in a deep base, so it looks larger face-up.
Elongated shapes — oval, marquise, pear, and emerald — also appear larger than round diamonds of the same carat because they cover more surface area on the finger. If maximising visual size matters, consider shape and cut alongside carat, not carat alone.
Balancing carat with the other Cs
Tell our team your budget and priorities, and we will show you certified diamonds that make the most of every carat.
- Prioritise cut first: A smaller, well-cut diamond outshines a larger, poorly cut one.
- Choose eye-clean clarity: SI1–VS2 stones often look flawless to the naked eye and free up budget for size.
- Go near-colorless: G–J color is hard to distinguish once set and stretches your budget further.
